... The march was a continuous ovation, Ladies lined the streets of the towns and showered flowers upon us – every delicacy the country could afford was spread before us, and we imagined ourselves heroes.  The only care that we felt was the dread that the war would be over before we got there.

... There was not a dry eye to be seen on the crowded street as the flower of the county marched away – many of them never to return.
